The Cockroaches of Creativity
Artists, dreamers and innovators like to think of creativity as a beautiful thing. However, creation is difficult, being a creator is hard work, and creativity, in its many forms, is treated as if it were a cockroach. It is to be feared and exterminated before it affects any type of change for good or ill. It is an appropriate comparison.
- Creativity is hard to kill. People who suppress their creative desires often end up with psychological issues. Some just become very unpleasant to be around. They are grouchy and unable to take the appropriate steps to self-actualization. Creativity will find a way and it will just keep coming back.
- Creativity contaminates other people. Even those who profess they are not creative, when surrounded by coworkers who are, become more creative. When creatives live or work in a place where others are creative, they become more creative.
- Creativity is scary. Being creative means bringing change to the world. Change is scary. Most people would rather live comfortably than deal with change. Creativity will make them uncomfortable.
- Creativity is rarely tolerated, so it has to be done in the dark. In the basement, in the shed, in the garage… There are a lot of places where people can be creative – out in the real world isn’t one of those places. Fortunately, creativity can thrive in the dark because it is acceptable there. It also needs to be exposed to the light to find out what it really is.
