'Frozen' warms the heart
“Only an act of true love can thaw a heart.”
This may be the message of every animated Disney film ever made. It may, in fact, be the message of every story ever told. People are better together rather than separate, and in spite of the deeply ingrained need that Americans have, at least on a mental level, to go it alone, people know this at an instinctual level.
When people are rebuffed and denied that human interaction, either through their own actions or ideas on how they will be perceived, or through the actions of others, the experience changes them and how they react to the world when they are finally allowed or forced to interact with others.
Frozen harkens back to the second Golden Age of Disney Animation. (The first had the nine old men; the second started with The Little Mermaid.) It is a full on musical that could be adapted for the stage – at least as far as the music goes. The effects will be a little more difficult to mimic on stage.
A beautifully created film, the characters are engaging. Olaf the Snowman, is the designated comic relief, and he works. Kristoff does a good job of being a reclusive ice salesman.
However, this story is about the sisters, their respective isolations and how they treat each other. If this movie doesn’t make you grateful for your family, it will make you grateful for the families of others. Anna and Elsa bring in the next evolution of the Disney Princess, picking up where Tangled left off.
If you are looking to be surprised this holiday season, Frozen is your best bet. There are a couple of scenes that will make the film worth seeing in 3D.
Be sure to stay through the credits and pay attention to them.
‘Get A Horse’ bonus
The short cartoon Get a Horse is rumored to have been made from forgotten footage that has been restored. Walt Disney provides the voice for Mickey Mouse. For any Disney fan, that would be enough to pay to get into the theater.
What the studio has done with the footage, however, is amazing…
Romney's Review this time is a triple feature starting with Frozen.
